Sources

  • Name meanings and origins. 1,895 of our 2,489 names carry a meaning adapted from Wiktionary, by Wiktionary contributors, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. We read the English Wiktionary entries through the Wiktextract / kaikki.org extract and shortened them to one line; each name page links to its source entry. Our adaptations are shared under the same license.
  • When the origin is debated. For 364 names we couldn't confirm a meaning from a sourced etymology. Those pages say “origin debated” and give the commonly cited explanation only as a theory, never as fact.
  • Popularity. Baby name counts and ranks come from the U.S. Social Security Administration's national baby names data (1940–2025). The SSA leaves out names given to fewer than 5 babies in a year.
  • Surnames. The Name Twin estimate uses the U.S. Census Bureau 2010 surname list.

Meanings vary between traditions, and Wiktionary itself is edited by volunteers, so treat any name meaning as a starting point rather than the final word.
